Hosta Tailgate 2012 for Region Four
Western New York Hosta Society is part of AHS Region Four, along with eleven other hosta clubs. The Board of Directors for this region has been planning a summer event to gather our membership for garden tours and camaraderie this summer. Tailgate 2011 was planned, but unfortunately had to be canceled due to health issues for the host. This year, planning is almost complete, and it’s a go for tailgating in Michigan, June 22nd and 23rd.
The idea is to offer discount lodging, plus gardens and nurseries to tour, along with a site for picnicking. The rest is up to those who attend. In other words, you arrange your own reservations, bring your own picnic food to cook on the grills provided, and BYOB.
Here are some specifics:
- The host location will be Kay Anderson’s gardens in West Olive, MI. She will expect us in the early afternoon to tour.
- At 3:00, we will caravan to Walter’s Gardens for a tour of their facilities.
- We will arrive back at Kay’s around six to grill our goodies and trade or sell hostas.
- Be SURE to bring a plant or two.
- Although you are free to book at any hotel the nearest facility where a discount has been arranged is the Sleep Inn in Allendale, at $65 per night. There is also a KOA campground within three miles of Kay’s.
- On Saturday you will be given a list of other gardens to tour and area nurseries to visit at your own pace. As of this writing, there are four wonderful gardens confirmed. Saturday meals are on your own, but you are invited back to Kay’s for snacks, more story sharing, and hosta trading! There may even be the possibility of having an auction at some point and more gardens to tour on Sunday.
